Paphiopedilum Barbatum is commonly called the slipper orchid because of the resemblance of the pocket-like pouch formed by the fusion of the lower two petals of the flower. This orchid is a terrestrial native orchid found within the rainforests covering the foot-hills of Penang island which also encircle the Penang Botanic Gardens. Sadly this rare plant is facing the danger of extinction due to illegal poaching and clearing of hill slopes in recent years. We adopt the slipper orchid as our Society's logo to remind us the important mission to save our rainforest.

Volunteer Programme coordinated by the Friends of the Penang Botanic Gardens Society with the co-operation of the Penang Botanic Gardens. Download the application form & read the conditions of participation here.
